Contemporary full brown calf, spine in 5 compartments, gilt title and decorations. Top of spine and frontcover on the hingings a bit worn. With engraved title page. Translated into Latin from the original Italian. Overall a fine copy. Leo Africanus, born Al-Hassan ibn-Wazzani, was born a slave in Granada of African descent. Because of his outstanding literary ability (he had already written a draft of this book in Arabic when he was captured), the Medici Pope Leo X freed him, converted him to Christianity and became his patron. This book, a detailed account of Africa, its trade routes, geography, terrain and people was an exceptionally important source for information on the continent and is generally considered the first book written by a person of primarily African descent. Son of the Antwerp bookdealer and engarver Silvester van Parijs. Married in 1563 with Mechtelt, daughter of the Antwerp printer Claes van den Wouwere, son-in-law of the printer Symon Cock. In 1567, active as printer, membership under the 'meesterzoons' of the Sint-Lucasgilde. In the same year he was suspictioned, printing herretic books and engravings.

¶ SALOMON GEßNER - Geboren am 1.4.1730 in Zürich; gestorben am 2.3.1788 in Zürich.- Geßner war Sohn eines Verlegers und Buchdruckers. Nach dem Schulbesuch in Zürich und Unterricht bei Hauslehrern ging er 1749 nach Berlin als Lehrling in der Spenerschen Buchhandlung. Diese Stellung verließ er bald, versuchte sich in der Malerei und schrieb Gedichte. 1750 reiste er zurück über Halberstadt (Besuch bei Gleim , dabei begegnete er Klopstock ), Hamburg, Amsterdam und Straßburg. Bis 1760 arbeitete er im Verlag seines Vaters (Redaktion der Montags-Zeitung). Im Oktober 1752 schloß er Freundschaft mit dem Dichter Ewald von Kleist und Christoph Martin Wieland , der von 1752 bis 1759 in Zürich lebte. 1761, mit seiner Heirat, trennte er sich vom Verlag seines Vaters und trat als Teilhaber bei Orell, Geßner und Comp. ein; daneben war er Teilhaber einer Porzellanfabrik (1763). 1765 wurde er Mitglied der Zürcher Stadtregierung, zunächst im großen Rat, 1767 im kleinen Rat; 1768 wurde er Obervogt bzw. Bezirksrichter in Erlenbach bei Zürich (in diesem Jahr war die Familie Mozart, auf einer Konzertreise in Zürich, bei ihm zu Gast). 1769 zog er sich wegen einer schweren Erkrankung von allen Geschäften zurück; erst 1772 übernahm er wieder die Redaktion der Montags-Zeitung (bis 1780, dann wurde sie unter anderer Leitung als Zürcher Zeitung weitergeführt). Im gleichen Jahr war er für sechs Monate Untersuchungsrichter. 1775, nach dem Tod des Vaters, übernahm er die Leitung des Verlages. 1776 erhielt er zusätzlich zu dem Amt des Obervogtes in Erlenbach das gleiche Amt in Wipkingen. 1779 stattete Goethe ihm einen Höflichkeitsbesuch ab; im folgenden Jahr begegnete er bei einem Kuraufenthalt Wilhelm Heinse . 1781 wurde er Oberaufseher über den stadteigenen Sihlwald. Im Juli 1784 besuchte ihn Sophie von La Roche .

This work is the reprint (first ed: 1605) of the treatise on burial customs of Antiquity by the German antiquarian Kirchmann (1575-1643), who made didatic use of the famous satire "Funus parasiticum", which is added here. Nicolas Rigault (1577-1654) wrote this emulation of Lipsius' "Somnium" while a voyage to the Island of the Asses, where a parasite Curculio is being buried with a lond funeral procession. Leo the African (Granada c. 1485-Tunis after 1554) was the European name of al-Hasan ibn Mihammad al-Wazzan, geographer and Moroccan ambassador to the Ottoman court.
