¶ Sir Aurel Stein (1862-1943) was a British archaeologist and geographer noted for his pioneering exploration of central Asia. After serving (1888-1889) as principal of the Oriental College in Lahore, Pakistan, he set out (1900) on the first of serveral expeditions along ancient caravan routes in central Asia. At Tun-huang, Stein discovered (1906-08) an important cache of Buddhist art and manuscripts. While superintendent of the Indian Archaeological Survey (1910-29), he located eastern battle stations of Alexander the Great. He was one of the last great explorers and knighted in 1912.
