Wilhelm Camphausen * 8. Februar 1818 in Düsseldorf † 18. Juni 1885 in Düsseldorf. Deutscher Maler. Nach seiner Ausbildung im Zeichnen bei Alfred Rethel trat Camphausen 1834 in die Düsseldorfer. Akademie ein. Seine Militärzeit bei den Husaren prägte ihn tief – zeitlebens blieb er Militärmalerei verbunden. Nach Absolvierung der Meisterklasse 1850 malte er zunächst historische Schlachtenszenen. Bewundert wurde er vor allem seiner genrehaften Darstellungen aus dem Reiterleben, an denen die realistische Detailausführung gelobt wurde. Seine größte Popularität verdankt Camphausen jedoch den großformatigen Reiterporträts von Kaiser Wilhelm, Friedrich II. und dem Großen Kurfürsten. Werkauswahl: "Prinz Eugen bei Belgrad" (1842, Köln, Wallraff-Richartz-Museum); "Gottfried von Bouillon in der Schlacht bei Askalon" (1845); "Begrüßung Blüchers und Wellingtons nach der Schlacht bei Belle-Alliance" (1862); "Erstürmung der Düppeler Schanze" (1867).
