This means that the consumer can rely upon the experience and professionalism of the participating dealers and the authenticity of the items available for purchase. Simply stated, all books, manuscripts and related material have been carefully examined for completeness and bibliographical accuracy. The level of inspection will ordinarily depend upon the value of the item(s) offered. Sometimes short notations of defects are lightly pencilled near the price. More valuable material is usually described in detail on slips that are loosely inserted. Please read them carefully. Any item is returnable for a full cash refund if defects or bibliographical inaccuracies are found, providing:
1. inspection is made and reported within thirty days of receipt (an immediate phone call or fax is urged);
2. material is returned in the same condition as when it was sold. All ILAB members are obliged to abide by this warranty, and any violator is subject to expulsion from the League. Address inquiries to the Nederlandsche Vereeniging van Antiquaren (NVvA), who will pass them on to the relevant national associations.

Amsterdam, J. Fr. Bernard, 1730. Large folio. 2 Vols. Uniform contemporary h.calf, backs gilt in compartments with fleurons, later marbled sides, and renewed endpapers. In the first Vol: (2 blank), (4), 84, (2 blank) pp. text. Title with handcoloured engraved vignette, 184 engraved plates on 47 leaves, richly coloured by hand, and a large handcoloured engraved tail-piece; the 2nd Vol: (2 blank), (4), 72, (2 blank) pp. text. Fine handcoloured frontispiece, engraved by F. Ottens, extra heightened with gold, handcoloured engraved title vignette, and 72 full-page engraved plates, very beautifully coloured by hand. e 145.000
Remarkably fresh copy in exceptionally fine contemporary colouring, occasionally heightened with gold or silver. This large format 'Bernard' edition comprises for the first time the complete works of Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717). They also include the later added plates, after posthumiously found drawings, of which 2 were engraved by A. Seba (1665-1736).
Maria S. Merian was the daughter of the successful German engraver-publisher Matthäus Merian and pupil of the artist Jacob Marrel. From early age she developed an interest in the metamorphosis of insects. After the separation from her husband, she and her two daughters moved in 1686 to the Netherlands. There she made the personal acquaintance of serious collectors, owners of natural historical cabinets ('Kunst- und Wunder-kammer'). After having seen specimens of insects from Dutch Guyana, she wanted to study these insects in their natural environment. With the financial support from directors of the Dutch West Indian Company, she and her daughters sailed off to Surinam, where they stayed from 1699 until 1701. All of Merian 's works were published and sold by herself, issued part by part, in small editions, each with a different title, in coloured and uncoloured versions, over an extended period of time. On the basis of some 60 water-colours Maria prepared her last and most important book, the 'Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium, ofte Verandering der Surinaamsche Insecten.' The third and last part on these Surinam insects, was published posthumiously by one of her daughters, and completely issued as: 'Over de voortteeling...' .
This third and main work of her with its beautiful artistic compositions, drawn from life, of insects amidst their tropical flora, is indeed rightfully considered as: "one of the most beautiful and unusual in the whole range of the natural history." - Landwehr Col. Pl., p. 28. It is the tropical counterpart of her two earlier works, dealing with European flowers and insects: '(Neues) Blumenbuch' and 'Der Rupsen Begin, Voedzel en wonderbaare Verandering' ('Der Raupen wunderbare Verwandlung'), here in this edition both united for the first time as: 'De Europische Insecten...'.
Some ten years after Merian's death, the Amsterdam publisher J.F. Bernard acquired all the original copper plates, including the 36 plates of the by then already forgotten early work '(Neues) Blumenbuch', published in three parts in-4to. in Nürnberg, 1675-1680. Therefore, not surprisingly, Bernard thought he published these plates for the first time.

'Teutsches Abctäfelchen'- Lischkens, nach dem Rathe des H. Hieronymus gesangweise, und vermischt eingerichtetes Teutsches Abctäfelchen.Vienna, Joh. Georg Lischke, 1780. ca. 21 x 29 cm. One leaf printed on both sides. With a large woodcut on front. e 1600
The representation of a method enabling every child, even the deaf and dumb, to learn how to spell within an hour. It also gives a shortcut method to learn the Latin grammar. The large woodcut on the right front shows how the human head and hands can be used as mnemotechnic devices, on the left front an alphabet in two types, including special letter-combinations. Around these illustrations an explanatory text and exercises. On verso, in 3 columns, in miniature script, the author's experiences with his method. The author Johann Georg Lischke was a teacher in Latin at the 'K.K. Ingeniur-akademie' in Vienna for over 25 years. He based his method on the works, dating back to the early Middle Ages, of Hieronymous, which was rendered to us by Gulielmus Gratarolus (1516-1568) and published for the first time in a posthumious edition of his 'Artis memoriae' in 1605.

The Beatles. Full set of signatures on a picture postcard. 1963. e 3400
Fine set of early Beatles signatures, written in blue ballpoint pen on the back of a promotional picture postcard of Swedish band The Prickles. These signatures have been obtained during the Beatles' first tour in Sweden, Octobre 1963, when their first album Please Please Me had just been released. The postcard shows some dampstains, but the signatures of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr are very clearly legible. See illustration.
N.B.: We all know who the Beatles were; the Prickles, however, were Ulf and Lars-Erik Göthager, Nini Johansson, Gösta Andersson and Ake Thylander.
Burroughs, William S. & Cobain, Kurt. Signed copy of: The Priest they called him. USA, Tim Kerr Records, 1993. 10" vinyl record in or. decorated sleeve (design: Mark Trunz). e 550
A recording of Burroughs reading his short story The Priest They Called Him, accompanied by Kurt Cobain, the late frontman of Seattle grunge band Nirvana. Burroughs' voice and Corbain's haunting distorted guitar parts have been recorded in seperate studios on different dates in 1992.
The front of the sleeve of this one-sided 10 inch disc (side 2 has Burroughs' and Cobain's signatures etched in the black vinyl) has been signed by both William S. Burroughs and Kurt Cobain. A mint copy!
N.B.: Kurt Corbain had been a fan of Burroughs ever since high school, he died in 1994, aged 27. Burroughs died in 1997, aged 83.
(Edmond Lajoux). Carnet de route d'un officier d'alpins, première série/deuxième série. Paris/Nancy, Librairie Militaire Berger-Lenvrault, 1915/1916. With 5 reproductions, 5 maps and 135 original watercolours by Edmond Lajoux. Cont. gilt full morocco with gilt morocco-lined protective jackets and slipcase, top edges gilt. 2 volumes 8vo. 1st editions. e 4450
2 volumes by an anonymous author, issued in the series La Guerre, Les Récits des Témoins, dealing on several battles which took place in France during the first few months of First World War. These copies have been beautifully and very skilfully embellished by Edmond Lajoux ("Peintre des Chasseurs") With 135 (one hundred and thirty five!) original watercolours: 17 double page, 61 single page and 57 smaller ones throughout the text. 13 of them have been fully signed. These very detailed and colourful watercolours have not been done on seperate sheets but were executed on the actual printed pages, causing quite a stunning effect. Both volumes rebound in fine blue and yellow morocco bindings with gilt lettering on the spines, with blue morocco-lined protective jackets with similar gilt lettering, housed in a sturdy morocco lined slipcase. Original printed wrappers preserved. Bound in the back of the second volume is a signed handwritten letter by Lajoux to the person who commissioned the artist. This letter learns that these watercolours have been done in 1945.
Mansfield, Katherine. Prelude. Richmond, Hogarth Press, 1918. Modern gilt limp vellum with ribbons. 8vo. 1st edition. e 1200
Handprinted in a limited edition of only 300 copies by Virginia and Leonard Woolf for their now world famous Hogarth Press. Katherine Mansfield (1888-1923) based this 68 page novel on her 1916 story The Aloë, which dealt on her New Zealand childhood. There are some curiosities noticable in the printed text: the heading on page 7 reads The Prelude, so does the running head from page 8 up to page 20. This partly unopened copy, with inner restaurations throughout, comes in a modern limp vellum binding, with gilt lettering on the front and on the spine, closed with blue silk ribbons. Damaged original printed royal blue wrappers bound in the back.
N.B.: The Hogarth Press was founded in 1917. Prelude is their third publication, the first was Leonard and Virgina Woolf's own Two Stories; the second one (a memorial pamphlet of poetry of Leonard Woolf's brother) was produced and published during the printing process of Prelude.
Sabbag, Robert. Snow Blind, a brief career in the cocaine trade. Edinburgh, Rebel Inc., 1998. Or. metalic fabric-backed mirror sides (design: Damien Hirst) in or. decorated slipcase. Large 8vo. e 2950
Recollections by Robert Sabbag, a business man who turned into a drugs smuggler, which have been first published in 1976. This sumptuously designed re-edition was issued in a limited edition of 1000 copies, all signed by Robert Sabbag, Howard Marks (a.k.a Mr. Nice, the guru of dope dealing, who provided the preface) and book designer Damien Hirst.
Hirst, one of the world's foremost modern artists, was responsible for the lay out and he designed the really superb binding as well: blindstamped metallic fabric spine with sides of real glass mirrors (for obvious reasons). Some of the pages have been die-cut (without loss of text) in order to store a supplied rolled $ 100 note, the last digits of which correspond with the number of the copy of the book. A metal AMEX credit card has been added as a bookmark. The sturdy slipcase pasted over with a similar photographic design as the flyleaves: bank notes.
An absolutely mint copy of this book (or is it a multiple?) in the publisher's original protective shipping box.
Satie, Eric. Sports et Divertissements: Musique d'Erik Satie, dessins de Ch. Martin. Paris, Lucien Vogel, [1925]. Loose sheets in or. decorated paper portfolio (design: Charles Martin). Oblong folio. 1st edition. e 950
Pink paper decorated portfolio containing 20 large sheets with an illustrated title caption by French Art Deco artist Charles Martin on recto and a reproduction of a hand drawn lyrical score by Erik Satie on verso; a decorated title page with a calligraphed preface by Satie on verso plus a full page hand coloured plate by Charles Martin.
900 copies were produced (225 of which were de luxe, each with 10 coloured plates), this is one of 675 regular ones, issued with just one handcoloured plate, as stated in the colophon.
In 1914 Satie (1866-1925) was invited by publisher Lucien Vogel to write short compositions to illustrations by Charles Martin; then a very fashionable artist. The works were completed in a few months time, but the the publication had to be postponed until 1925, due to the outbreak of World War 1.
N.B.: Vogel approached composer Igor Strawinsky first for this project. Strawinsky turned him down, stating that payment was not sufficient by far. Erik Satie, Vogel's second choice, at first was insulted by the height of the salary and would only do it if he were to be paid less...
Villiers de L'Isle-Adam, Comte de. Akëdysséril. Paris, M. de Brunhoff, 1886. With a frontispiece by Félicien Rops. Richly gilt half morocco, top edge gilt (G. Canapé). Large 8vo. 1st edition, with an original handwritten letter by the author bound in. e 3750
The first edition of this poem in prose by Jean Marie Matthias Philippe Auguste Comte Villiers de L'Isle-Adam has been printed on Japanese paper in a limited edition of only 250 copies, all with a photographic portrait of the author, a frontispiece by Félicien Rops (printed in 3 states) and several anonymous head and tailpieces and ornaments in red and black.
This copy comes in a fine richly gilt orange half morocco binding by French binder Georges Canapé, original printed wrappers preserved.
Bound in is an original handwritten letter by De Villiers de L'Isle-Adam to his publisher De Brunhoff, in which the author states his difficulties with the method of payments for this particular work, Akëdysséril. De Villiers explains he is in need of the money and urges De Brunhoff to find a solution for this problem. This fine double page letter is fully signed and dated July 28, 1886.
De Villiers (1838-1889) symbolist author/poet/philosopher/occultist, was most famous for his Les Contes Cruels (1880), translated as both Cruel Tales and Sardonic Tales.

One of 50 numbered and signed copies on special paper that remained hors commerce. With an inscription to H. Tutein Nolthenius, former head of the Delftsche Slaoliefabrieken, who commissioned artists such as Toorop and Van der Leck to design posters for his firm. Contrary to the famous poster by Toorop, the designs Van der Leck made in 1919 were never executed, but they mark his invention of "the parallel destruction of image and typeface" (Broos & Hefting, p. 65), that in the end evolved to the rarissime example of De Stijl book illustration presented here. Letters and images are entirely (re-)constructed by the artist (see illustration). Extremely nice copy of this captivating work

Relian, L. Original fair-copy of a journal kept by Louis Relian (d. 1778), a physician from Geneva who made the passage to the Dutch East Indies in the service of the Duch East Indies Company (VOC) as a physician-surgeon on the ship 'De Batavier'. The very interesting and detailed day-to-day account is on p.3-257, and ends at his arrival in China in June 1753 after a prosperous and eventful journey via the Cape of Good Hope and Batavia. The detailed and very amusing description of the many events that took place during the long journey and the circumstances on board, makes this text highly important for the history of shipping and navigation in general and for the history of the Dutch East Indies Comapany in particular.- Very good copy.- (Some browning throughout).- Cf. On the title-page it is erroneously called the second edition, but that edition already appeared in 1802 printed on Barbados, after the first Copenhagen edition in 1781. "This specific Creole-Dutch jargon was in its expressions and constructions much like the corrupted English as it was spoken by the Negroes in the United States".- Good copy.- Sabin 56364; Catalogus Bijbelgenootschap. Eliance Pers. Complete run of the press! 49 vols. e 8500
One of the most important private presses of the postwar Netherlands. Peter Muller, the man behind the Eliance Pers, was active as a publisher/printer from 1968-1980. This private press combined an exquisitely pure typography with an impressive succession of authors, for instance Gerard Reve (7 titles), E. du Perron (4), F.C. Terborgh (3), Jan Greshoff (2), A. Roland Holst (2), J. Slauerhoff (2), S. Vestdijk (2), Hans Warren (2), Gerrit Achterberg, Armando, Louis-Paul Boon, Lodewijk van Deyssel, Ida Gerhardt, Ed. Hoornik, W.F. Hermans, Gerrit Kouwenaar, Harry Mulisch, J. van Oudshoorn, Leo Vroman and others. 15-125 copies of each title were printed, generally about 50. In the first five years the books were hand printed by Peter Muller himself, but as he was more interested in typography than in the printing itself, he decided to have most of his books printed according his instructions by professional printing firms. Some of these books are quite voluminous for a 'small press': up to 164 p.!
This complete run consists of the 34 Eliance Press editions, plus the eight titles of the parallel 'Erotisch Panopticum', and seven editions outside the series. Extensive description on request.

To 'Beste Adri' and 'Lieve Adri' (2x).
(As: Jacob de Haan). « Pijpelijntjes ». (Het leven van Cor Koning en Felix Deelman). A'dam Jacq. van Cleef, [October] 1904. Original cloth. Top gilt. Corner of title-page cut out, without loss of text. Second, completely revised edition. e 450
The first edition of Pijpelijntjes was published in June 1904. The writer A. Aletrino, to whom this open homo-erotic novel was dedicated, recognized himself in one of the main characters in the book ('Sam', Aletrino's nickname). He bought the whole stock and destroyed it. Only a few copies remained. In October 1904 De Haan published a completely revised edition of Pijpelijntjes. Names of characters were changed and the style of the novel is quite different. The first edition applies nowadays as one of the rarest books in Dutch literature, but this second edition is very rare as well.

Darwin, Ch. Die Abstammung des Menschen und die Geschlechtliche Zuchtwahl. Aus dem Englishen übersetzt von J. Victor Carus. Stuttgart, Schweizerbart, 1871. 8vo. In two vols. W. 25 & 51 woodc. Ills. Contemp. half clf. (VIII, 377, I (Nachtrag); VIII, 418 pp.). e 522DSB V, pp. 561 - 571: 'Darwin's next book "The Descent..." (1871) filled in what was only adumbrated in the "Origin". T.H.Huxley and W.H.Flower had shown already that the body of man differs less from that of an ape than the latter does from that of a monkey. It is important to remember that Darwin never claimed that man was descended from apes, but that man's ancestor, if alive today, would be classified among the primates, and would be even lower in the scale than the apes.': Freeman, 1065: First German edition, this set dated 1871 in both volumes, the year of publication of the original English edition.
Descartes, R. La Geometrie de René Descartes. Paris, Chez Charles Angot, 1664. In 4to. W. woodc. Vign. On title and numer. Woodc. Ills. Fine contemp. Overlapping vellum, spine gilt tooled, but faded. (119, VIII, I (blank) pp.). e 4600
DSB IV, pp. 55 - 65: 'Whatever the early influences on Descartes'mathematics, it nonetheless followed a relatively independent line of development during the decade preceding the publication of his magnum opus, The "Geometrie" of 1637 ... Descartes sought then, from the beginning of his research a symbolic algebra of pure quantity by which problems could be analyzed and qualified in terms of the constructive techniques required for their most efficient solution. He took a large step towards his goal in the 'Rules'and achieved it finally in the 'Géometrie' [which] represented the sum of mathematical knowledge to which Descartes was willing to commit himself in print. The same philosophical concepts that led to the brilliant new method of geometry also prevented him from appreciating the innovative achievements of his contemporaries. His demand for strict a priori deduction caused him to reject Fermat's use of counterfactual assumptions in the latter's method of maxima and minima and rule of tangents. His demand for absolute intuitive clarity in concepts excluded the infinitesmal from his mathematics.' ': Guibert, nr. 4 pp. 31 - 33: Bell, Ch. 3, pp. 35 - 55: It is given to but few men to renovate a whole department of human thought. Descartes was one of those few. ...[He] remade geometry and made modern geometry possible ... Descartes did not revise geometry; He created it.': Dibner, Heralds, see item 81: Smith, II, p. 323: A very attractive copy.

The collection consists of six maps, four large, folding views and 32 double page, smaller views.
8vo. 11 unn. ll., 112 pages and 5 folding plates. Contemporary boards (recent title-piece). Bound without free endpapers. Moderately browned due to the nature of the paper, two stamps on title, otherwise fine. e 1600
Only edition. The author has remained unknown to Holzmann-Bohatta and Weller. From the introduction one can gather that he had a horological laboratory in Halle and must have enjoyed a sound reputation. The book is preceded by a long dedication to Louise Dorothea, Duchess of Saxony. The present book can be seen as the swan song of the water clocks, a type of clock which would have been soon superseded by the clocks and watches of new model built according to the instructions of Berthoud and the English clockworkers. The book is divided in thirteen chapters; in the first previous models of water clocks are discussed, among which that of Radi and Vailly. The second chapter concerns the matter from which a water clock may be built; the author limits hiself to metals; surprisingly lead is taken to be appropriate, whereas alloys are inappropriate. Until the twelfth chapter all the experience of the author concerning water clock manufacture and maintenance is disclosed. The models of clocks invented by the author (one using sable instead of water) are discussed in the last two chapters. Two more models of clock (one serving for astronomical purposes) are discussed in the appendix."The author claims to have made water clocks and to have kept them in going order and, judging by the details described, the claim appears to be justified ... The author shows a novel form of clock ..., in which the hour ring turns to show the hour by the star acting as a pointer ... The clock is wound up by turning the drum so as to wind the cords up on the shaft. The author recommends mixing one-third part of alcohol with the water" (Baillie pages 231-233, with 2 illustrations). Not in Tardy, Engelmann and no copy in NUC.

A choice of highlights from our stock of over 100.000 items:
From our collection of our main speciality, Dutch Literature:
Elsschot, Willem Verzen van Vroeger. Haarlem, Joh. Enschedé en Zonen 1934; First Edition; one of 12 de-luxe copies on Japanese paper (Japon supernacré); typography: J. van Krimpen; with Elsschot's signature; small stain on frontcover. e 4500
From only 2 first editions by Elsschot exist de-luxe copies; his first novel Villa des Roses and this one. From the former a dedication copy to the dedicaté was offered on the 2001 Fair (and sold for fl. 35.000,-!).
Leopold, J.H. Cheops. [Rotterdam, the Author 1914]; First Edition; [printed in 13 copies by Fa. Benedictus] on Dutch paper by Van Gelder Zonen; blank green wrappers. e 12.000
This, the real first edition, before the publication in De Nieuwe Gids, Jan. 1915 and before the edition in Van Royen's private press De Zilverdistel 1916, is practically unknown. After many years of searching by Henri Dirkx it was not found in his famous collection, neither in the Van Eyck collection (also auctioned by Beyers, 1972); the simple cover of green paper, blank and unadorned, plus the extremely small edition of 13 copies only, must have been the reason for its obscurity. We used the term the rarest book for Naenia by Boutens in our catalogue 220, but Naenia printed in 12 copies will look after itself by being a spectacular book with ornaments by J. Toorop - this booklet with the most famous poem by this great poet is the one that earns this qualification.
Slauerhoff, J.J. Archipel. Amsterdam, Van Kampen 1923; First Edition; cover faded, some foxings; with a dedication by Slauerhoff and corrections (the errata) in his hand. e 3975
Slauerhoff, J.J. Serenade. The Halcyon Press, Maastricht 1930. First Edition; printed in 310 (+ some H.C.) copies, one of 10 de-luxe copies on japanese paper; typography: A.A.M. Stols. e 1975
Timmermans, Felix: his portrait, original drawing by Isidoor Opsomer, black chalk on paper, ca. 300 x 210 mm.; framed. e 2450
From our next catalogue 240: XXth Century Art: Avant Garde and Illustrated Books:

Pfintzing, Melchior. [Die gehuerlicheiten und einsteils der geschichten des loblichen streytparen und hochberuembten helds und Ritters herr Tewrdannckhs.]
Schoensperger aus Augsburg, [Nueremberg], 1517. First edition. Folio, 118 numbered woodcut illustrations in text by H. Burgkmair (13), H. Schaeuffelein (20), L. Beck (77) and a further 4, 280 (of 290) numbered leaves, lacking title, index with colophon and a blank, printed on vellum. Seventeenth century roan, spine gilded, but some oxydisation, corners restored, head of spine torn with some slight loss. e 120.000
VD16 M1649; Adams P 962; Fairfax Murray 329; Muther 845; Von Arnim, Buchill, 70; Van Praet IV 233ff. First edition according to the differences noted by Murray in the two edition of 1519. This is a special copy on vellum of the famous allegorical account of the honeymoon of Kaiser Maximilian and his bride Maria of Burgundy in the tradition of the late courtly verse works. It shows in the fine illustrations an idealised autobiography. These woodcuts are the high point of German Renaissance book illustration. This edition was intended for presentation, and the only 40 copies printed on vellum were destined for highly placed personages. This copy was in the possession of the Pernnstorffer family, probably in Austria. The volume was used by first Wilhelm until 1540 and then Caspar Pernnstorffer until 1579 as a family chronicle, listing family births, deaths and marriages. From around 1580 to 1650 it served the family as a Liber Amicorum, with short, typical entries of the time. The volume was bound after the loss of the title and final leaves in the mid-seventeenth century. There was then a new owner Hannibal Graf von Schulenburg. In 1794 it appeared in ownership in Freiburg and was then purchased by Freiherr Joseph von Lassberg, with his arms on aiii, and thence to the Fuerstenberg library.
The work lacks ai (title), P5 (blank) and at the end A1-8 (index), a2 (dedication) has some slight lack of text, P8 only a portion, these fragments soiled, otherwise a clean, fresh copy with some slight spotting and light browning in some areas. Some other minor defects, two woodcuts coloured. A broad margined copy.

According to a prospectus published by Jobard, the (anonymous) accompanying text was based on the memoires of Napoléon's contemporaries E. Las Cases, Ch. de Montholon, B.E. O'Meara, G. Gourgaud and others.
¶ Volume II lacks lithographed frontispiece-portrait of Napoléon Bonaparte as emperor. A few plates and text-leaves of volume I skillfully restored in lower blank margin. Plate 110 with accompanying text-leaf in volume II loose. Both bindings (slightly) rubbed along extremities (especially the corners of both covers). Both volumes occasionally slightly foxing, otherwise a good set (in very good interior condition) of one of the highlights of Belgian nineteenth-century lithographic art.

Editio princeps of two curious treatises by the historian Van Boxhorn (1612-1653). The first book deals with the history of long hair style in the Low Countries, from the Roman times up to Boxhorn's days. A woodcut on page 46 depicts a man with long hair. The second book is a continuation of the first and describes the history of short hair style. It contains a.o. a letter by Hadrianus Junius to Martinus Aedituus (Coster) in which he writes about the Italian academic custom of wearing short cut hair at college. Boxhorn states that this custom from Italy and Spain was recently followed in the Netherlands. The two treatises are rare examples of writings about the history of daily life in our country. In 1742 and 1745 Boxhorn's Mirrors were reprinted in Leiden.

New Hollstein, Muller Dynasty II 42-55; Hollstein XIV 20-33; Bartsch 43-56. The Amsterdam draftsman, printmaker and painter Jan Harmensz Muller (1571-1628) made many drawings and prints thoughout his life. Muller spent several years, from 1594 to 1602, in Naples and Rome before returning to Amsterdam to manage the publishing business he had inherited from his father Harmen Jansz Muller (1540-1617). Muller was trained by his father first and possibly had an apprenticeship in the workshop of Hendrik Goltzius in Haarlem. Though Muller made engravings after his own drawings, many were made after works by Haarlem Mannerists like Goltzius and others. The Passion was published by his own firm [c. 1615-1620]. Later the plates came into possession of the Amsterdam print dealer Cornelis Danckerts and finally Clement de Jonghe, who published the present copy of the series.

Reynard the Fox / Reinardiana
Unique collection of 9 original, engraved copperplates about the well-known beast epic Reynard the Fox. These 9 extremely beautiful engraved copperplates about Reynard the Fox (7.5x5.5cm) were first used for the Belgium edition by Jaques Panneels and Charles De Vos: "Le Renard ou le procez des bestes", Brussels, 1739; later for the Paris reprint edition of 1788: "Les intrigues du cabinet des rats". e 5550
Extremely rare and beautiful set of the important fable of Reynard. The copperplates are of high quality and can still be used very well. They bear the monograms B.L;fec and B.fec. The full name of the engraver is not known. The original edition was illustrated with 21 engravings. The 9 very beautiful copperplates therefore represent a good selection. The collection is presented in an elegant, gold-plated frame and contains the following illustrations and chapters. -II, Grimbaert the Badger defends Reynard before the King.
-III, Cantecleir the Cock, accompanied by his children, appears before the King.
